Toronto, ON – War Child Canada is pleased to announce that ArtBarrage.com will be presenting FreeHand, a unique contemporary art auction event in support of War Child. Bidding is set to open online at Artbarrage.com on Saturday, October 1st, 2011. FreeHand will feature up to 50 works of art from local and international artists in all media. Proceeds from the sale of auction pieces will benefit War Child, an award-winning charity that provides humanitarian assistance to war-affected children in some of the most devastated regions of the world.
Freehand will conclude on Tuesday, November 8th, 2011 with a LIVE auction at 99 Sudbury in Toronto, an event that promises to be spectacular. The event will begin at 6:00 pm. Tickets are $100 and can be purchased directly through info@artbarrage.com, by calling 416 209-4321, or in person at the War Child office, 489 College St, Suite 500, Toronto. Your ticket will not only allow you to participate in the live auction but also to partake in a great after party.
Curated by Kelly McCray and Walter Willems, works for FreeHand have been donated by contemporary artists based on excellence in their respective mediums as well as commentary on the War Child vision: A World Where No Child Knows War. Artists include Sara Angelucci, Janet Bellotto, Stephen Brookbank, Russell Brohier, Kotama Bouabane, Scott Everingham, Elle Flanders and Tamira Sawatzky, James Fowler, Eldon Garnet, Michelle Gay, David Grenier, Heather Graham, Noel Harding, Sherri Hay, Catherine Heard, Nina Leo, Sue Lloyd, Derek Mainella, Dyan Marie, John Monteith, Tibi Tibi Neuspiel, Anne O’Callaghan, Luke Painter, Jaclyn Shoub, Camilla Singh, Meera Margaret Singh, Natalie Waldburger, Donald Weber, Jacob Yerex and others. In addition, three very special pieces created by children in Afghanistan will be featured in the FreeHand auction. These one of a kind pieces were created in art classes hosted in War Child’s programs.
FreeHand was born when ArtBarrage approached War Child as a partner to raise funds for their important mandate and to profile contemporary visual artists. The connection between art and War Child’s programs is of particular importance as art is often used as a rehabilitation tool for children in conflict and post-conflict communities. The children are able to tell their stories through paint and drawing, often expressing experiences and emotions for which they cannot always find words. The partnership War Child shares with ArtBarrage exemplifies how individuals can connect with children and youth in conflict zones and use their own skills to raise much needed funds.
